Béatrice et Bénédict in Augsburg

„Uta BUCHHEISTER bestimmt so den Abend. Wie sie sich von bissig, über höchst verunsichert zu vorsichtig liebend, dies aber nie ohne Stachel, wandelt, ist ein Genuß. Ihr schöner, gestaltungsfähiger Mezzo unterstreicht das Bild.“ „Thus Uta Buchheister dominates the evening. It is a pleasure to watch her turn from viciousness to uncertainty, finally to cautious tenderness without ever losing her sting. Her beautiful and flexible Mezzo enhances this impression.“ (www.mittelloge.de zu Béatrice et Bénédict am Theater Augsburg, 5. Juni 2007)

At the beginning of June I had the chance to play once more my beloved part of Béatrice in Berlioz´ beautiful and rarely performed comic opera Béatrice et Bénédict. Sadly this was the dernière of the Augsburg production. I will look out for more chances to sing this exciting and demanding role.

Niebla

„Mezzosopran Uta Buchheister und Sopran Katia Guedes bilden mit der herrlich knarzenden Stimme von Oliver Nitsche einen genussvollen Kontrast.“ „Mezzosoprano Uta Buchheister and Soprano Katja Guedes make for a delightful contrast with the gloriously rasping voice of Oliver Nitsche“ (Steffen Kühne in Leipzig-Almanach.de)

In September 2007, I had the privilege to take part in the world premiere of Niebla at the European Centre of the Arts in Dresden-Hellerau. The novel „Niebla“ by Miguel de Unamuno was set to music by Elena Mendoza-Lopez in joint authorship with Matthias Rebstock, who directed it. It is a highly innovative project, which combined scene and music in a unique way. Thanks to an unusual rehearsal process, in which all participants were involved right from the beginning, a closely interwoven musical and scenic structure evolved, which was demanding for all of us.

Musicians acted as characters on stage while the singers and the actor were given instrumental parts. My part of Eugenia, a capricious and frustrated piano teacher, included not only singing, whispering and speaking but also performing on the piano, prepared piano and percussion. The premiere was on the 29th September, with more performances on the 30th September and 1st October 2007. Niebla marked the opening of the „Dresdner Tage der Neuen Musik“ 2007.

It received high critical acclaim and will be taken to several other venues in Europe such as the Konzerthaus Berlin and the festival „Musica de Hoy“, Madrid in Summer 2009. MDR Figaro broadcasted the performance on 6th December 2007.

Kaiser von Atlantis

May 2007 saw the relaunching of Viktor Ullmann`s opera Der Kaiser von Atlantis oder Die Todverweigerung. I have taken over the part of the Drummer (Trommler) in performances at the Konzerthaus Berlin, Werner-Otto-Saal. This coming spring there will be more performances . The dates are 23rd, 29th and 31st May and 6th June 2008.

More information about this production, directed by Cornelia Heger on www.konzerthaus.de.

St. Mark´s Passion

On 21st March (Good Friday) 2008 I will sing the alto part in a brand new edition of Johann Sebastian Bach´s St- Mark´s Passion at the Münster in Ulm, Germany. Christopher Weik will be conducting. This version is still in the process of being edited at Peters Publishing house, so it will be a world-premiere.

Contemporary Compositions by Berlin and Israeli Composers

Last spring Martin Schneuing and I devised a program of contemporary sacred/mythological chamber music by composers from Berlin and Israel. Performances took place at the Emmaus-Kirche, Kreuzberg and at the Centrum Judaicum on Oranienburger Straße. Our musicians were clarinetist Matthias Badczong, violinist Eva Polster and Cellist Regine Zimmermann.

The programme includes works by Tsvi Avni, Leon Schidlowsky, Gabriel

Iranyi and Samuel Tramin. It is particularly suited for sacred environments such as churches, synagogues etc. A ten minute audio trailer of the concert can be ordered from me via email.

Recitals of Contemporary Music with Pianist Martin Schneuing

Our next recitals of music by contemporary Berlin composers will take place on 22nd November 2008, Schwartzsche Villa, Berlin- Steglitz 20th March 2009, Konzerthaus Berlin, Musikclub
